Events Centre:

The earthquakes of 2010/2011 had a large impact on the University of Canterbury, this project one of several we undertook for the University to get the campus back to 'business as usual'. A fast track project procured by the University, we were engaged to coordinate and manage the predesigned LVL structure.

The project faced many challenges, including a very tight timeline, an evolving scope of work and a tight budget. It was handed over on time, defect free.

  • We were engaged to undertake and manage this project for the University of Canterbury on a cost plus reimbursement basis. We undertook all cost engineering and budgets from inception through to completion.
  • The project incorporated the following factors:
    • designed to house 1000 people in the events centre and 200 in the terraced areas
    • 9.6m high timber structure
    • approximately $1 million in variations to the project following commencement of work without any extension of time required
    • approximately $1.5 million of building services (HVAC, data security, plumbing, drainage, electrical & fire systems)
    • a total building size of 1150m2, the building consisted of a 9.6m high, 64m long x 25m wide structure with outbuildings and terraces (approximately 200m2)
    • there were 2 No staged building consents & 3 amendments to building consents
    • the documentation for this project was being developed at commencement with only site and structural shell documentation completed prior
    • plans and specifications were issued as the project progressed and the consents were amended as required
    • the fit out documents were issued by the Interior Designer for pricing only 6 weeks prior to completion/handover
    • 166 contract instructions were issued throughout the project (an average of 2.75 instructions per day for the duration of the contract) resulting in $1 million worth of changes to the initial scope and budget

Testimonial

"The University of Canterbury gratefully acknowledges the support you have provided in response to the earthquake in Christchurch on 4 September 2010. We have been truly humbled by the willingness and speed of response of the many people, suppliers and organizations that have helped us during this time. Your generosity has been much appreciated and has made it possible for us to get back on track so quickly. "

"We have been closely involved with Image Director, James Woods, on several simultaneous, complex, fast track projects at the University of Canterbury. These include the $4m phase one and two Undercroft projects at the James Hight Building. These projects contain high level M&E works and architectural detailing.

James has simultaneously managed this project in tandem with another fast track project, the $3m 'UCSA Event Centre' project again containing complex AV, electrical, architectural, mechanical and coordination components. All of these projects have been delivered in a fast track timeframe.

James Woods has become one of [our] Christchurch offices preferred contractors based on his innate ability to manage complex projects in a competent professional manner."
